Two years ago, a single father was working in Fort Myers installing pavers. He had one young daughter and another baby girl on the way. Then everything changed.

While pregnant, his daughter’s mother began behaving erratically, and signs of abuse were found on the young girl. The court determined that she posed a danger to her children. After she gave birth, he was awarded custody of both daughters. Overnight, he became the sole caregiver to both an infant and a toddler.

Navigating Life on His Own

Looking for stability and support, he moved to Immokalee, leaving his job behind. He found temporary shelter but was asked to leave after only a few weeks because the program served single mothers, not single fathers.

With nowhere else to go, he and his daughters moved into a small section of a trailer that had been divided into six separate living spaces. Their portion of the trailer contained little more than a twin mattress, a crib, and a microwave.

There was a shared kitchen, but he didn’t own pots or cooking supplies. He searched for food he could prepare in the microwave, occasionally borrowing a pot from a neighbor and returning it as soon as he was finished.

Meeting Families Where They Are

His most immediate challenge was simply getting enough food for his own family.

With no car and without reliable transportation, visiting a food pantry wasn’t always possible. He reached out to Meals of Hope, one of Naples Children Foundation’s trusted Hunger Initiative partners. Through their Food Delivery Initiative, he began receiving weekly grocery deliveries.

“I don’t know what I would be doing right now without the food deliveries every week,” he later shared.

For many families, transportation, childcare, work schedules, or even the fear of asking for help can make traditional food pantries difficult to access. Home delivery removes those barriers, allowing families to receive nutritious food where they are.

A Network of Support

As part of the Naples Children Foundation’s network, Meals of Hope knew that this father and his family needed more than food alone. They connected him with a broader collection of nonprofits that work together to support children and families throughout Collier County.

They began with Guadalupe Center’s Baby Pantry, where he received diapers for his daughters. He walked more than 30 minutes, pushing both girls in a stroller, to pick them up.
The NCF Pediatric Health Center became a central connection point for many of the supports the family received. While visiting the Center, he was connected with an NCH Healthcare System Pediatric and Special Needs Specialist who worked directly with him to address barriers beyond healthcare, coordinating transportation assistance through the provision of a bicycle and helping secure essential household items, including pots and pans, as the family established their home. During those same visits, his daughters also received dental care through the Oral Health Initiative partner, the University of Florida.

At the same time, Early Learning Initiative Partner, Guadalupe Center recognized the urgency of the family’s situation and helped move the girls forward on the waiting list for daycare and preschool.

Each NCF-connected organization brought its own expertise, while working toward the same goal: giving this family the support they needed to build a more stable future.

Building Stability, One Step at a Time

With his daughters in childcare, he was able to search for steady employment and begin rebuilding his financial independence. And as the family’s needs changed, additional NCF partners stepped in.

The Early Learning Initiative’s STAR program worked with him and the children at the NCF Pediatric Health Center through behavioral health services, helping provide emotional support and ongoing care for the family in light of everything they had experienced. Their team also assisted with scheduling medical appointments so that both girls continue receiving the healthcare services they need.

Guadalupe Center continued advocating for the family, eventually helping to secure a two-bedroom apartment. Through beneficiary Catholic Charities, the family was also provided financial assistance to ensure they could reasonably afford their new living arrangements. NCF-led community organizations then worked together to furnish the apartment with beds, sofas, clothing, diapers, cookware, cleaning supplies, food, and other essentials. For the first time in years, they all have their own rooms in a safe, comfortable space where they can simply be children.

Why Collaboration Matters

Families facing complex challenges rarely need just one service. They need food, healthcare, childcare, transportation, housing, emotional support, and trusted guidance along the way.

That is why Naples Children Foundation invests in a network of nearly 60 experienced nonprofit partners. Each year, these collaborations positively impact 35,000 lives throughout Collier County.

Each organization specializes in a different area of care, creating a coordinated system that allows families to access the right support at the right time, without having to navigate every challenge alone.

Every Family Deserves the Chance to Thrive
