For one Collier County mother, it began with a car ride in the middle of the night.
After years in an abusive relationship, she packed what she could, loaded her three young children into the car, and left everything else behind. No long-term plan or financial safety net. Just the hope that somewhere, someone could help.
At The Shelter for Abused Women & Children, one of the Naples Children Foundation’s trusted community partners, she and her children found immediate safety: food, clothing, counseling, legal support, and a secure place to sleep. But escaping crisis is only the beginning; rebuilding a life is a long road. Naples Children Foundation (NCF) provides a network of care that is coordinated, comprehensive, and far more sustainable than a single intervention.
The Strength of Coordinated Care
For families in crisis, the greatest challenge is often not finding one resource. It is navigating dozens of disconnected systems while trying to survive day-to-day. NCF was built to change that. The foundation invests in a network of nonprofit partners working together across Collier County. The goal is long-term stability for vulnerable children and families.
As this mother worked to regain her footing, that network supported her family’s changing needs.
When housing instability and financial pressure became overwhelming, an NCF-supported partner, Better Together, stepped in. The organization provides short-term care for children and also hosts job fairs and offers mentorship to help parents get back on their feet. “It was the turning point we desperately needed,” the mother shared.
Support at Each Step Forward
As stability slowly returned, the NCF network provided additional resources to help her continue her journey toward independence. Her children enrolled at Fun Time Early Childhood Academy, an NCF-supported early learning center serving children from infancy through Pre-K. There, the children had consistency, encouragement, trusted adults, and a safe environment where they could thrive.
“They feel like extended family,” says the mother of the teachers who helped guide her children through those years.
After school, the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County provided a safe and joyful place for the children to learn, play, and build friendships while their mother worked full-time as a medical assistant. Still, even with steady employment, affording groceries remained a weekly source of stress.
Through the Naples Children Foundation Hunger Initiative, in partnership with Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida and the “Harry’s Helpings” program, supplemental food was sent home with her children directly from their early learning center.
Around the same time, Fun Time connected the family to NCF’s Oral Health Initiative. Her children received dental screenings directly at school before continuing care through the NCF Pediatric Dental Center, eliminating transportation barriers, missed workdays, and impossible financial tradeoffs.
Achieving Long-term Stability
With coordinated support and growing stability, the family moved into their own apartment. The children had healthcare, meals, early education, and after-school support. Their mother no longer lived entirely in survival mode and was able to begin imagining a future again.
Today, she is talking about going back to school, getting a place where each of her children has their own room, and even doing some traveling. She is able to think about a life that feels larger than the next overdue bill.
